The Golden Rule: Universal Concept

A Rule in Common: Norman Rockwell’s ‘Golden Rule’

"A group of people of different religions, races and ethnicity served as the backdrop for the inscription “Do Unto Other As You Would Have Them Do Unto You.” Rockwell was a compassionate man, and this simple phrase reflected his philosophy."

“I’d been reading up on comparative religion. The thing is that all major religions have the Golden Rule in Common. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Not always the same words but the same meaning.”

– Norman Rockwell

The ‘Golden Rule’ – shared ethical understandings across religious traditions

"As the Dalai Lama makes clear in the rest of the book, the Golden Rule is merely an entry point to living a truly compassionate life. That said, the deep similarities of what constitutes an ethical life across so many religious traditions as these examples point out help point to a deep connection and unity across humanity – something which ought to be appreciated."

The Golden Rule Project

"Ethic of Reciprocity" passages from various religions: Bahá'í Faith to Taoism:

"THE MISSION OF THE GOLDEN RULE PROJECT IS TO INCREASE THE PRACTICE OF COMPASSION, KINDNESS, AND EMPATHY BY SHARING THE UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLE OF THE GOLDEN RULE THROUGH ARTS AND EDUCATION.

THE GOLDEN RULE PROJECT IS NOT RELIGIOUS, NOT POLITICAL, AND NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY AGENDA. WE PROMOTE THE GOLDEN RULE AS A BASIC HUMAN VALUE."

Karma, the Golden Rule, and Newton’s Third Law

"So whether we look at our actions through Newton’s law, the law of karma, or the Golden Rule, the conclusion becomes very clear. All of those immutable laws tell us that we should be very considerate and mindful with our actions because they always have consequences. In a sense, we create our own happiness, misery, or our hell and heaven.

Although we may never feel the results of our actions in this temporal world, those karmic consequences have more significance when seen in the light of our spiritual journey beyond this earthly life. Though these laws encourage us to be thoughtful about our actions lest we hurt someone, that is not the highest goal for us."

The ‘Golden Rule’

"At its essence, reciprocity is the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have done to you.

Essentially, this is the application of the principle of the golden rule across 14 different faith traditions. It does not say they are all the same, rather it reflects a broader equanimity between all faiths and faith traditions, and no matter your belief others believe similarly to you."
